Tai Chi returns to Private Health

Statement from Mark Butler M P,

Minister for Health and Aged Care April 2025

Australia Reinstates Tai Chi in Private Health Insurance

The Australian Government has officially reinstated Tai Chi as a supported natural therapy under private health insurance, following an independent review led by Chief Medical Officer Professor Michael Kidd AO who, in leading the review, was satisfied there was enough evidence these therapies are effective to allow them to return to being supported by private health insurance.

The Government has accepted the recommendations of the Natural Therapies Review, announced by the former government, following the exclusion of 16 natural therapies from private health insurance benefits in 2019.

Tai Chi was among seven therapies—including yoga and Pilates—found to have strong evidence of health benefits. This decision represents a significant step forward in the global recognition of Tai Chi as a safe, effective form of mind-body exercise.

While coverage will vary between insurers, the move reflects a broader international trend: governments and health systems are increasingly acknowledging Tai Chi's proven benefits for physical and mental well-being.
